Many people around the world now feel that countries and international organizations have become like statues—silent spectators. Organizations such as the United NationsUnited Nations (UN)Founded in 1945 to maintain international peace. In the Gaza crisis, the UN Security Council’s ability to act has been repeatedly blocked by U.S. vetoes of ceasefire resolutions., the OICOrganization of Islamic CooperationAn international organization of 57 member states. Critics argue the OIC has failed to translate its strong rhetorical support for Palestine into concrete economic or political action., the International Court of JusticeInternational Court of Justice (ICJ)The principal judicial organ of the UN. In January 2024, the ICJ found a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza and ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide under the 1948 Genocide Convention., and Human Rights Commissions appear to many people as institutions that only speak about peace and humanity while taking credit for being powerful, without effective action on the ground. But is this right?
When we witness the killing of children, pregnant women, men, and women; the abduction and displacement of civilians; and the spread of disease, malnutrition, and profound trauma across Palestine, it deeply shakes our belief in humanity. The lives of countless children and families in Gaza have been brutally disrupted. At such moments, many people begin to question whether humanity truly exists anymore and whether the values taught in schools, colleges, and universities have any meaning in reality. According to UNICEFUNICEFThe United Nations Children’s Fund, which reported that over 14,000 children have been killed in Gaza, and thousands more suffer from severe acute malnutrition and trauma., thousands of children have been killed or affected in the Gaza Strip, while countless people have been displaced. These horrors are unimaginable.
On one side, organizations such as the UN and OIC speak about peace, justice, and human rights, yet many people feel that real action is missing. At the same time, when conflicts involve countries such as Iran, Afghanistan, or Syria, international laws and military interventions are often enforced aggressively. Is this not hypocrisy?
When Donald Trump stated that the world should avoid World War III and work together to rebuild Gaza and ensure stability in the Middle East, many people questioned why weapons continued to flow into the region at the same time. As a result, many feel that international organizations no longer truly serve humanity, but instead serve political interests and powerful individuals. Those leaders and institutions that present themselves as protectors of peace and human dignity are also being questioned by the world. Many people believe that Palestinians fighting for their rights, dignity, and survival are being ignored, and their suffering has been reduced to nothing more than a story for the international community.
