NEW DELHI / LUCKNOW: Extending its full support to the National Conference (NC) and its leadership, the Socialist Party (India) has endorsed the demand for the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. In a formal communication addressed to NC Vice President Shri Omar Abdullah ahead of the proposed protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on July 20, 2026, SP(I) General Secretary Sandeep Pandey confirmed that party members will physically participate in the demonstration.
The party also reiterated its stand that Article 370 should be restored for Jammu & Kashmir, calling it a vital step toward political decentralisation and federal democracy. Furthermore, SP(I) announced plans for solidarity marches from Jammu to Srinagar, as well as from Kargil to Leh in support of Ladakh’s demand for statehood, a dedicated legislature, and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
The complete text of the official communication from the Socialist Party (India) is reproduced verbatim below:
To: Shri Omar Abdullah
Vice President, National Conference
Jammu and Kashmir
Date: 11 July, 2026
Subject: Socialist Party (India) supports the proposed protest on 20 July at Jantar Mantar and your demand for restoration of full statehood for J&K.
Respected Omar Sahab,
Socialist Party (India) wholeheartedly supports your proposed protest on 20 July, 2026 at Jantar Mantar, Delhi to demand restoration of full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. It is a long overdue demand and must be immediately met. Some of our members will also be physically present during the protest.
Socialist Party (India) also believes that Article 370 must also be restored for J&K and the same status should be accorded to other states as well, as this will be a right step in the direction of decentralisation of political decision making, which should be welcome in any federal democracy.
Socialist Party (India) may soon organise a march from Jammu to Srinagar in support of the above-mentioned demands. We may also organise a similar march from Kargil to Leh in support of the demands of movement in Ladakh for restoration of full statehood, a dedicated legislature and inclusion of Ladakh in Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
We hope that J&K and Ladakh would soon enjoy the same status as other states do in the Indian democracy.
In Solidarity,
(Sandeep Pandey)
Secretary General, SP(I)
