In very different circumstances of sustained peace, with its beautiful beaches, lagoons, highlands, heritage sites and famous mud brick skyscrapers of centuries ago Yemen could have been a much sought-after destination for tourists. However, these are far from the thoughts associated with the country in recent times, as Yemen has instead been known during the past decade for unending wars, bombings, and a humanitarian crisis..
From 2015 onwards, the people of Yemen have been hit by thousands of bombs and missiles from Saudi Arabia, the USA, Israel, and their allies. In addition, there have been civil war conditions for the greater part of the last decade, or the lost decade as far as development opportunities are concerned.
The result is that with a population of about 43 million today, nearly 22 million people are affected by humanitarian crisis. UN authorities state they are woefully short of funds to meet humanitarian crisis needs, but the number of people affected by the crisis is increasing daily as more people become refugees. Yemen is a country which needs and deserves much more attention. Its population is higher than Saudi Arabia (36 million people) and its population density (81 per sq. km) is about five times higher than that of Saudi Arabia (16). Yemen is among those countries highly exposed to climate change and related disasters, including floods, droughts, cyclones, and sea-level rise.
Recent estimates indicate that nearly 5 million people are already internally displaced in Yemen, while nearly half a million are likely to have perished since 2015 due to wars, civil wars, blockades, and the humanitarian crisis. in Yemen, while nearly half a million are like to have perished since 2015 due to wars, civil wars, blockades and humanitarian crisis. In these times of climate change, this country with its deserts and mountains also faces a severe water scarcity crisis and groundwater table has receded in many parts to an alarming extent.
In this most populated country of the Arabian Peninsula (projected 2026 figures), poverty levels are generally considered the highest among Arabian countries. Instead of aiding their poorest neighbor, Saudi Arabia and some of its allies have bombed Yemen and its people for years.
The discord arises from unwarranted efforts to decide who will rule Yemen. Saudi Arabia insists on supporting the leadership claims of a Presidential Leadership Council chaired by Rashad al-Alimi, an entity accepted by the USA and its close allies. On this basis, it is often stated to have international recognition, ignoring that its acceptance stems more from Saudi support (several of its leaders primarily reside there) than from support among the Yemeni people. chaired by Rashad al-Alimi, an entity accepted by the USA plus close allies and on this basis often stated to have international recognition, ignoring that it is more accepted on the basis of Saudi support (several of its leaders prefer to stay here for the greater part) than on the basis of its support among the people of Yemen. To add to the woes and confusions, the UAE has also been supporting a Southern Transition Council, whose strength considerably diminished after reversals a few months ago., whose strength has considerably reduced after reversals a few months back.
Conversely, Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, clearly has a more solid support base among the people of Yemen. or the Houthis clearly have more solid support base among the people of Yemen. Its support base among the Zayadi religious and ethnic community, which constitutes about 35% to 40% of the population, is particularly strong. religious and ethnic community, which constitutes about 35 to 40% of the population is very strong. This community’s religious leaders have often been the ruling elites in Yemen in earlier times. The Zaydis are Shias, but their distinct religious beliefs and practices can differ in some respects from those more commonly seen in Iran. It is clearly unfair to dismiss Ansar Allah as merely an Iran proxy, as they have a firm base in Yemen., as they have firm base in Yemen. In a free and fair multiparty election, this group is likely to win in a unified nation, although different political formations naturally have more support in their specific areas of influence, as occurs in most countries.
Ansar Allah has been an active and important player in the multifaceted events of the last decade, or rather the last 15 years, in the country. They also held a significant position in the interim arrangements reached as a result of a UN-mediated truce in 2022, which broke down in July 2026. Clearly, they have emerged as a force that cannot be ignored, not only due to their support base but also because of their resilience in surviving relentless bombings. They have even dared to aid the people of Gaza by attacking Israeli assets at a time when more powerful and better-positioned Arab countries failed to provide meaningful assistance. It appears to be only a matter of time before Ansar Allah’s strengths are recognized by the international community, given the important geographical and geostrategic position of the area they increasingly control, particularly around the Red Sea. position of the area increasingly controlled by them around the red sea in particular.
It is extremely important that attempts to bring peace as early as possible are strengthened by all forces, based on existing realities and international recognition of them. Without peace humanitarian crisis will increase and at the same time it will become difficult to take much needed food, medicine and other relief to people. The UN has played an important role in peace efforts in the past here and should do so again, and everyone should support these peace efforts.
