Opening The Rift

The USA is one of those countries which is most blessed by natural conditions for safety and defense. Surrounded by two oceans the USA had been extremely difficult to attack for a long time and although this situation has changed in times of modern warfare which has made it possible to attack all parts of the world, still it can be said that the geographical conditions of the USA give it a significant advantage.
To this it should be added that the USA is also the most advanced in terms of defensive weapon capabilities. Thirdly, the special conditions of the end of the Second World War were such that the USA emerged as the unquestioned most powerful country in the world. While the USA also suffered in this war, the Soviet Union lost the most human lives and suffered devastating harm. Any other potential rivals of the USA such as Germany, Japan and Britain had also suffered very heavy damage and moreover, as the biggest imperial power of pre-war days, Britain was happy to pass on its legacy of leadership to the USA. Further, compared to the earlier big powers of Europe, the USA had a lot of goodwill at world level as it was not yet identified with the exploitation and cruelties of the biggest European powers. It was also helpful that in the preceding decade, the USA had one of its best Presidents, FDR, who was identified with justice in several contexts. This further improved goodwill for the USA and helped to cover some of its more problematic aspects temporarily., identified with justice in several contexts, which further improved the goodwill for the USA and helped to cover some of its more problematic aspects for some time.
At the end of the Second World War there was the significant Bretton Woods agreement. This gave the US dollar a highly privileged position in the world economy and created other sources of increased economic power, further strengthening its established world leadership position. a highly privileged position in world economy and created other sources of increased economic power, further strengthening its already well-established position of world leadership. Thus the situation in 1945 was extremely favorable for the USA. The plain truth is that the USA did not have much to do to maintain this eminent position of leadership. Simply following a path of peace, stability, and fair play, with some commitment to justice, would have ensured its number one leadership position grew from strength to strength. There was no need for wars; none were imposed on the USA. While Stalin and Mao caused violent disruptions within their own countries and economies, resulting in millions of deaths, there was no indication they planned to attack the USA or seriously threatened its people. and Mao may have caused very violent disruptions within their own countries and economies, resulting directly and indirectly in the loss of millions of human lives, there is no indication that they were planning to attack the USA at any stage, or that the life of the people of the USA was threatened in any serious way by them. Therefore, highly destructive wars like the Korean and Vietnam Wars, which cost millions of lives and caused widespread injury, disability, displacement, and disruption, were entirely avoidable from the USA’s perspective—wars of choice, not necessity; foolish, not wise; aggressive, not needed. and the Vietnam wars, in which millions of human lives were lost and multiple numbers of this suffered serious injuries and disabilities, displacement and disruption, were entirely avoidable wars from the true perspective of the USA, wars of choice not of necessity, wars of foolish choice not of wise choice, wars of aggression not of need. Even if some of the exaggerated views of the necessity of such wars provided by supporters of US policy are accepted, it still needs to be said that the matters could certainly have been resolved at the negotiating table.
To be fair, however, two significant appreciations for the top USA policy makers should also be recorded here. They were able to resist some influential persons, including the highly aggressive former Prime Minister of Britain Winston Churchill, who favored a big nuclear weapon assault on the Soviet Union within the period (1946-49) when the USA had nuclear weapons but the Soviet Union did not. Peace-loving people worldwide salute the US policymakers who resisted this proposed nuclear assault on Soviet cities, thereby preventing millions of deaths. Secondly, we salute President John Kennedy, top Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, and their colleagues, who steered the world back from the brink of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis..
Around 1989 the Cold War ended and, with the disintegration of the Soviet Union, a new phase started in which the USA was the only great power for a period of around 28 years, up to around year 2017 or so, may be a little earlier or later.
The USA’s unrivalled power was now even more emphasized, and opportunities to strengthen it further through policies of peace, stability, and fair play were greater. Once again, the USA acted foolishly, engaging in unjustified, avoidable, and destructive wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and elsewhere.
The third phase began around 2017. Largely due to the USA’s foolish policies, China and Russia had started emerging as rivals in an increasingly multipolar world.. Once again the USA has been found to be acting in foolish aggressive ways as can be seen in its completely unjust and entirely avoidable attacks on Iran and others.
The extent of avoidable aggressions is much higher if proxy wars and regime change operations are included, as they sometimes claim more lives than direct wars, considering both direct and indirect impacts. and regime change operations are also included, as these should be, as sometimes these claim even more lives than some of the wars, if both direct and indirect impacts are included.
Therefore, a strong case exists for the USA to choose a different path to durable, sustainable leadership—one based on peace, trust, and fair play. This path will help the USA achieve external peace and internal stability (as shown in previous articles, external peace policies can reduce internal violence, turmoil, addiction, and mental health issues, fostering a sense of purpose).
